On this day in 1960, Fidel Castro’s revolutionary government in Cuba 🇨🇺 nationalised all US-owned sugar factories

Before the Cuban revolution, US financial interests owned:

90% of Cuba’s mines

80% of public utilities

50% of railways

40% of sugar production

25% of bank deposits

In response to Fidel Castro removing the US’ iron grip over the island nation, the CIA launched the failed Bay of Pigs invasion and tried to assassinate him over 600 times. All of them failed and Fidel would live to the age of 90 before passing away in 2016.

On this day in 1961, 1500 CIA-trained Cuban exiles supported by the US Air Force land on the Bay of Pigs in Cuba 🇨🇺 to begin a military operation to overthrow communist revolutionary Fidel Castro and the Cuban government.

While they had expected popular support, the exact opposite happened with the Cuban population and the armed forces rallying around Fidel Castro. It took just 3 days for Castro’s forces to defeat the US-sponsored invasion and the result was humiliation for the United States and JFK.
